OSX Lion headphones sound bug
If you’re trying the new developer preview version of OSX (10.7 – Lion) and find that the default sound output (headphones) is misbehaving, there is a quick fix for it.

According to OSX developers, if you go into the Audio MIDI Setup (under /Applications/Utilities) and change the output format from 2ch-16bit to 2ch-32bit (like in the image), that should take care of the problem.
Peace.

Thank you this advice is something Apple should have provided or implemented in an update.
It worked just fine.
Hi, i would just like to mention that the problem appeared again after using DVD Player while having VLC open. Its awkward that DVD Player still functions fully when choosing the Digital coded optical output but VLC still crashes upon selection of the coded output.
This trick does not work for me. Nor the 'sudo killall coreaudiod' command in Terminal, opted in other blogs. My only option is to re-boot.
Annoying !
Cheers
pedro, thanx for helping out,i woulda ruined my new computer without you,

Nothing works for me and I've tried every fix suggested in every forum. I have a Mac Pro, and although the internal speakers work, my external speakers will not. Here's a question: in the Audio Midi Setup if I remove Built-In Line Output from the menu bar on the left (using the minus sign) can I re-install it (using the plus sign), and would that re-boot the external audio? Just a thought. Nervous to try it in case the option fails to return!
Sorry, I actually have no idea if that will work or not. You can always reinstall lion, as a last resort though

not really a "quick fix, when the setup midi program crashes when opening
That sucks

Just upgraded to Lion. I don't have the 2ch-32bit option at all and I'm still having this problem, no matter what setting I choose. HELP!
Sorry, the final version completely fixed it for me. Can't help you
I'm on Lion preview for a couple of months and it's all good. Suddenly all programes can't play sound, and I find here through google. I want to fix it using your method, but, in my Audio MIDI Setup, I can only see 16-bit, 20-bit and 24-bit. Why?…
Any of the options will do. At least it works for me.
It didn't. But on the GM I haven't run into this bug again, so I think it might be fixed (fingers crossed).
Hehe, let's hope so

Oops I meant to reply this to my post.
Maybe you can help. I have a MacBook Pro 5,1 an running 11A494a. I don't have that 32-bit sound option. http://d.pr/ar4d
I think just the fact that you select a different one should work.
it's a crash and burn issue for me. The mouse functions don't work. Half the time it crashes, and the menu commands don't work. The only thing I've been able to do is turn the metronome on and off through the menu command, and play music back. Even thats iffy. So far I've tried trashing prefs, but haven't reintsalled yet. Thats my next move.
Well, good luck
anyone notice garageband is not working with this release?
Haven't tried GarageBand with it yet. Is it also a sound issue?
thanks! didnt think of that. this has probably already been reported as a bug but thanks for the fix. i also am having trouble with the full screen safari, it's tough to replicate, but it loses the ability to type on input forms when using full screen mode. apart from those, this release is pretty stable.
No problem. This was really pissing me off, especially because i installed Lion on my living room mac mini, which is currently my media centre. Having no proper sound going out to my speakers was no good
And you're right, it feels really stable
Yeah, I have a big sound system and like to aux into it. Trying to play music for my gf and getting ugly stuttering was just embarrassing. I found your post just in time! ; ]
Glad i could play my cupid part, hehe. Have fun
