A new study has found that a specific gene (P21) is directly linked to regenerative properties that you typically find in reptilian creatures, such as salamanders. Apparently, when deactivated, this gene allows mice cells to behave more like stem cells and fully regenerate wounds without leaving any scars. Are we close to super fast regeneration, [...]
This is probably the first useful mass email that my mother sent me in a long, long time In any case, it shows how to put a nail into a really hard wall without ending up bending the nail. I know i had this problem before in more than one occasion.
Following up on my post about RAM (or lack of it), i decided to install a proper wordpress plugin to cache most of the stuff in static HTML files. It’s called WP-SuperCache and i’m hoping it’s really super But now i cannot but wonder if i shouldn’t – somehow – find a way to have [...]
I know what you are thinking: “Well, duh Pedro, how come you didn’t know that?”. I’ll explain: Recently i started having some service shortages on my blog. From times to times the CPU usage would just go rooftop and then nginx and apache both stopped serving requests. I am using Linode as my host, where [...]
It has been exactly 3 years and 4 months since i set foot on the Netherlands and – as i get ready to leave this place – i can’t help it but thinking about all the things i found, done, and learned while being here. This is my attempt at summarizing it, in no particular [...]
I don’t know if you noticed, but youtube introduced speed controls to their HTML5 video player. I have no idea if it was there from the beginning, actually, but it’s a really cool feature indeed
With less than 20 days until my return to the country where the sun does shine (Portugal), i can’t help but thinking more and more about these 3 years in Holland. With that in mind, i decided to write a really long post on my experiences here in the Netherlands during this time. For the [...]

Every Friday i’m going to write a post with cool stuff that i found during that week unless something more important comes up, like a really really good TV show or movie – or if i get abducted by aliens. … The latter did release version 3.6 with full HTML5 support, but apparently youtube doesn’t know that Cool new web site uptime monitor (free) – I was later shown another one (thanks Nick) which is more web 2.0esque, though they both do the same: Send you an email when your website is down.
While skimming through a blog entry by Nicolas Patten (http://twitter.com/nicholaspatten), I noticed the small twitter follower counter he has on his Posterous account. When I clicked to check it out, I eventually tried to see what the stats were about my own twitter account. As you may or may not know, some 3 months ago [...]
What about this awesome tool that allows you to write much more simple and powerful CSS for your websites? It’s called LESS and it basically introduces things (that in my opinion have been missing in CSS for ages) like variables, nested declarations, and operations on values. Worth checking out: http://lesscss.org/index.html Posted via web from nocivus’ [...]
It seems to be a service that gives you suggestions on what to visit when you go to a particular location. It creates the planning about what to visit for a couple of days. Looks interesting, check it out for Amsterdam: http://citytours.googlelabs.com/search?q=amsterdam Posted via web from nocivus’ ramblings
One of these days, accidentally, I removed isync from my mac. After *a lot* of googling around I found this page that saved my life: http://www.feisar.com/isync_tips.html Here are the steps. You can do one of 3 things to restore isync: 1) Restore iSync from your Time Machine backup (or any other backup you’ve made). 2) [...]
Oh man, do I love OSX or what? I’ve been trying for ages to get a Portuguese radio stream (RFM) to work on ubuntu (no luck with rhythmbox, or even firefox for that matter). It might be related to the fact that they use an .asx stream (windows stuff, ouch). But here comes Apple [...]
Just had an enlightened moment: I’ll put my tiddlywiki inside my dropbox. It’s like having a personal wiki on a server, minus the server. This way I can have my wiki accessible across all my computers and whatever changes I make (anywhere) will be momentarily available on all computers. Perfection!
