As far as drummers go i always looked at Mike Portnoy – from the band DreamTheater – as one of my all time favorites. Only recently (and to my sorrow since he died in 1987) i came across the one who is definitely the greatest drummer of all time. I’m talking about Buddy Rich.

Jumping, working, jumping, house hunting

I just realized i haven’t posted in a while. The reason for that is threefold: i have been working a lot, jumping a lot more than i used to, and searching for a new house. That’s right, i finally decided to actually buy a house, mainly because i’m tired of moving my stuff around all the time; i moved 5 times in the last 3 years (rented places in Holland).

Regarding skydiving, i’m currently looking for a nice used equipment (everything) with a 150ft2 main canopy. Preferably a Stilleto. So, if you know anyone who might be selling something like that, drop me a line.

Last weekend i managed to do 3 jumps, 2 of which in great company. You can check it out below:

Video speed controls on youtube’s HTML5 player

I don’t know if you noticed, but youtube introduced speed controls to their HTML5 video player. I have no idea if it was there from the beginning, actually, but it’s a really cool feature indeed

Things i wanted in Apple’s iPad (tablet)

Cool as it may be, i cannot but feel disappointed with Apple’s newest unveiling – the iPad:

No camera – Really? In this day and age of videoconferencing?!? What are you guys thinking?
No GPS – It does have assisted (wifi/3G) GPS but it’s not quite the same, is it? Especially when you don’t have wifi or 3G available;
No magical, shiny, new multi-touch UI paradigm – Maybe i was affected too much by the hype that has been created around it but i like to be surprised. And i have to say i wasn’t. Apart from the changes to the iWork suite to make it usable on a touch screen there is nothing really awesome about it;
No multitasking – No comments there. I wonder if it has copy & paste?
No phone calls (and SMS’s) – Has 3G but you cannot make phone calls or send messages? Doesn’t make sense to me;
64 GBs is really not enough for what you are going to want to carry around in it.

Now things that i *do* like in the iPad, so that this is not a bashing post:

It looks like the mockups that drifted on the internet before. And those looked cool;
The iBook application and store. As long as they support free/open PDF files;
Seems to be powerful enough to play basic 3D games (quake II – like);
Battery life is really nice. 10 hours for normal usage and up to 1 month in stand-by mode;
The price was a nice surprise. I always said that they would compete with netbooks’ prices and apparently i was not mistaken;
I love the keyboard dock and also the hard cover that changes into stand. Really clever!

That being said, i believe this is nothing more than a big iPod touch (not even an iPhone, since you cannot make phone calls) and will not deserve my $499 this time.

3D TV

I’m struggling to find the “awe” factor in the current incarnation of 3D TV. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice. But it’s just not what i had in mind when i thought about 3D television for the first time. In my mind, i see it as virtual space where you can turn anywhere to watch whatever you want at any given time. Either with buildings or some other clever analogy that fits our brains, but not the current “stereoscopic”, goggle-based, thing that we call 3D.

As far as movies go, i wanna be inside the action! I want to be able to run (or drive) after the vilains that are chasing the good guys. I want to be able to follow the good guys for the whole movie, or just sit on top of a really tall building and see everything happening from above. Anything less than that and i simply cannot call it 3D TV.

But then again, i have been accused of having bad temper

VLC for OSX developers needed

According to a post on their forums, there are currently 0 (zero) developers working on the OSX version of the popular video player VLC.

If you know someone with Cocoa skills that wants a good challenge, pass the message on.

Please do, I don’t want to lose my favorite video player of all times

Qik.com just released a desktop application to view qik videos. Here’s the mandatory screenshot:

Although it’s a cool addition to the awesome qik service, I have to say I am a bit disappointed.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that I now have a “friends TV channel” kind of thing in my desktop, but I was expecting it to allow me to stream from the desktop application also.

Maybe in the next version, qik?
